You are NOT making a rod for your own back, you are meeting your baby's needs.
Yup, Pointing Rachael is correct. Carry your baby, cuddle them, feed them, rock them to sleep. I promise they will outgrow all of it, some children take longer than others, and sometimes you get to the point where you need to gently speed that up.
All of those are ok, listen to yourself and your baby.
